Preparing for Midterms

Updated: Nov 3, 2022

Midterms are coming up and students are feeling the pressure of having to review study guides, past quizzes and class notes. A one-to-one or group tutor can assist students in test prep. strategies and ease the anxiety of the academic load. Whether a student is struggling with study skills, managing time or learning new material, a tutor can build skills and confidence as well as make learning fun and productive.

An experienced tutor teaches executive function skills, the Cornell note taking method, pre-writing strategies, math concepts, project based learning, test prep, and study techniques to lock material into long term memory. It is known that if you break up study tasks into meaningful chunks, and then study them for 20-30 minutes a day, three or four days before a test, it is then easier to lock the material into long term memory. Middle school and high school students who struggle in classes such as math, geometry, algebra, Spanish, advanced algebra, English, or Mandarin can often benefit from study groups or studying one on one with a tutor. Students of all ages who build rapport with their tutors often begin to excel in their coursework. They begin to see the endless light through the academic tunnel. It often helps to be taught through another lens and different perspective or method than the teacher. Since some students learn visually and others learn auditory or through tactile methods, it can really be a crucial benefit to have an armor of study techniques under your belt. Many tutors teach organizational skills, time management skills, test preparation and support a student's confidence level by providing study skills support. Tutoring either in a group setting or one on one is often a key support system for elementary, middle and high school students to improve grades and confidence. Once a student has developed study support skills, note taking help and time management skills, that new found confidence in math, English, chemistry, economics, reading comprehension or written language, it changes the ballgame on how they perform in school and on tests.
